How You Can Help
Three Main Ways You Can Help
  1. You can support Atlantis Clean Energy or other active organisations that are making a direct change participate
  2. You can make individual changes to slow pollution & climate change See how below
  3. If you are able to you can invest in clean energy companies
  4. Finally you can action with your vote, lobby your local politicans to do more or vote for those candiates that will make change happen

INDIVUAL CHANGE
But Can Just What I Do Help?
As we explain in various facts and statistics throughout our website, a pollution free and sustainable future will require a global transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources.

It is not a feasible option for people just to reduce their travel or by changing their eating habits. A long term solution will require changes from the source right through to our production process, in many sectors of society.

However in the short term, until these large scale system can be gradually changed, reducing down your impact will help to slow the pollution and greenhouse gas emissions currently. Then once we have our clean systems in place, people will be able to enjoy travel, food, driving and using whatever energy they need without worrying that it is having a negative impact on our world.

So what can you do personally to help with the transition?
Making small changes in your daily life
Changing your energy plan
The burning of coal, natural gas, and oil for electricity and heat is the largest single source of global greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, about 65% of global electricity is still generated from fossil fuels.

One of the most effective things you can do personally is to change your energy plan for your home or business. Call now and talk to your energy company to see if they have any 100% clean plans. If they say yes, ask them how they can be sure that their electricity and heat come from clean sources. If they say no, try to change to a company that offers 100% clean plans, or at least invests a percentage fo what you pay in to creating new clean energy production facilities.

Changing the way you get around
By changing the way you travel from point A to point B, you could personally have a significant impact on global GHG emissions:
  1. Carpooling to work with 4 passengers instead of individually – 75% reduction in emissions per passenger per km
  2. Traveling domestically by train or coach instead of plane – 83-89% reduction in emissions per passenger per km
  3. Traveling internationally by train or coach instead of plane – 86-97% reduction in emissions per passenger per km
  4. Getting around on foot or by bicycle – 100% reduction in emissions
These are definitely good short term solutions, but still a drop in the ocean. If we really want to make a difference, we need to change the transportation industry altogether.

TRANSPORT – FOSSIL FUEL BASED
Switching to electric cars
If everyone changed to electric cars like this, we could significantly reduce transportation emissions.

If we look at countries like Norway where electricity is generated from clean sources, electric cars could reduce emissions by 70% per car. If we can further change the way that cars and batteries are manufactured, this reduction could possibly reach 90-100% per car.

Making Small Changes to your diet
In order to reduce these emissions, it isn’t necessary to make dramatic changes to your diet. In fact, if everyone made small changes, it could significantly reduce global emissions from the agricultural sector. According to the IPCC, if everyone simply moderated the amount of meat that they eat daily, we could reduce global emissions by 3 gigatonnes per year.

Sources of emissions
Global Greehouse gas Emissions U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: From IPCC (2014) [3]
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the four sectors that produce the most GHG emissions are:
  1. Electricity and Heat Production (25%)
  2. Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (24%)
  3. Industry (21%)
  4. Transportation (14%)
Transport is lower than other sectors on the Greenhouse Gas emissions, however, it is a very high consumer of fossil fuels using approximately 25% of global energy consumption which releases a huge amount of harmful air pollutants [7]
Understanding your carbon footprint
A carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, event, organization, service, or product, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent.

In countries such as the U.S., Australia, and Canada, carbon footprints per capita are over 3 times the global average. European countries have managed to reduce their carbon footprints in recent years by promoting clean energy, but still often fall above the global average.
  • Country - Metric tons per capita (CO2 equivalent)
  • United States (2016) - 15.5
  • Australia (2016) - 15.5
  • Canada (2016) - 15.1
  • Germany (2016) - 8.8
  • Spain (2016) - 5.2
  • France (2016) - 4.6
